Clyfford Still Museum, Colorado
As a finalist in an invited international competition, we proposed a sequence of intimate galleries as optimal way to display Clyfford Still’s work. His paintings are powerful and demanding, and his work is best seen singly or in small groupings. By presenting only a few pictures in each gallery the viewer would be best able to experience with the visceral character of Still’s work.
A central courtyard brings in daylight and creates a reference point for a visitor’s exploration of the work of this important Abstract Expressionist. The quiet, horizontal massing of the building is a counterpoint to the highly expressive Denver Art Museum next door.
